Definitions
Adware: adware is any software application in which advertising banners are displayed while the program is running. Content Filtering: On the Internet, content filtering is the use of a program to screen and exclude from access or availability Web pages or e-mail that is deemed objectionable or non work-related.
Keyloggers: A keylogger or keystroke logger, is a software program that monitors each keystroke a user types on a specific computer's keyboard.
Malware: is any program or file that is harmful to a computer user. Thus, malware includes computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses, and also spyware, programming that gathers information about a computer user without permission.
Phishing: is e-mail fraud where the perpetrator sends out legitimate-looking e-mails that appear to come from well known and trustworthy Web sites in an attempt to gather personal and financial information from the recipient.
Pharming: is a scamming practice in which malicious code is installed on a personal computer or server, misdirecting users to fraudulent Web sites without their knowledge or consent.
Spyware: is software that aids in gathering information about a person or organization without their knowledge.
Trojan: is a program in which malicious or harmful code is contained inside apparently harmless programming or data in such a way that it can get control and do its chosen form of damage.
Virus: a piece of programming code usually disguised as something else that causes some unexpected and usually undesirable event. A virus is often designed so that it is automatically spread to other computer users.
Worm: is a self-replicating virus that does not alter files but resides in active memory and duplicates itself.
Bot: a program that operates as an agent for a user or another program or simulates a human activity. Surfbots, used to facilitate Internet use, often include spyware. Spyware programs are sometimes known as spybots.
