Total Tech, founded in 2004 by Ken Hamilton, was created to serve the IT needs of small and mid-size businesses, by providing you with your own virtual IT department designed to keep your business running smoothly without the down time, outages, and technology disruptions, all for an affordable monthly fee.

Ken spent more than 20 years in Corporate America before deciding to start his own company. What he saw was that small and mid-sized businesses needed enterprise-class IT services in order to grow to their full potential, but many of these businesses lacked either the finances or the time to find and hire enterprise-class IT support people. These are the expert and custom-tailored services that Total Tech provides its customers.

As Ken sees it, when you enter into a business relationship with Total Tech, you are hiring Ken to act as your CTO and his Total Tech Team to act as your IT Support.  This is an important decision, and Ken believes it is important to ensure that his business philosophy is synchronized with yours.

Two years after starting Total Tech, Ken was featured in the San Diego Business Journal.  Below are some excerpts from the article and responses to interview questions that will allow you to get to know Ken and the philosophy behind Total Tech:

When asked about the driving force behind starting his own business, Ken said he had tough love to thank for it.  After spending more than 17 years working in Corporate America, he was exploring the idea of starting his own company, but like countless small-business owners before him, he struggled with giving up a steady paycheck.

That is until one day when an entrepreneurial friend put everything into perspective with one gut-wrenching observation:  “You’ve been institutionalized!”

“I was very upset by that at first,” Hamilton said. “In fact,” he said, “I’ve got to go,” and he walked away.
After some thought, Ken began to realize his friend was right. He had become programmed to expect a paycheck every two weeks and to follow the rules his company had set forth with little to no personal risk to himself.  He’d followed the crowd and put his livelihood into someone else’s hands for far too long.

After this epiphany, Ken picked up the phone and called his friend. “I apologized first and thanked him second.” he said.Armed with newfound courage, Hamilton launched his company in 2004, initially working with other businesses to secure their computer network systems.  Within two years, Total Tech was bringing in over $1.25 million in revenue,

While carefully building success over these past seven years, Ken readily admits to having more questions than answers in the beginning. “I was really driven by fear in starting the business initially because I only had so much startup money, and I knew once that was gone, that was it,” Ken said.

Fast forward seven years… through a number of political and economic changes – and Total Tech is still going strong.  Ken begins each day excited to face the challenges, successes, and opportunities that come with a technology-related business, and ends each day satisfied that he has built a team and is offering the crucial and important services that are making the significant differences for all Total Tech clients.

When asked a few other key questions, here were Ken’s responses:

Best way to stay competitive:
Staying strategic and tactical at the same time.
Building a strong infrastructure.
Always asking what’s next.
Having the tools in place to be operationally sound.
Utilizing the right tools and efficiencies to maximize profitability.
Having the best people & most diverse skills on my team.

Guiding principles I will continue to follow: Hiring the best and most talented people. Our success is predicated on providing technology solutions for our customers.  We need to meet or beat their expectations and be open to new ideas and new ways of doing things and solving the next /other challenges.

The most important part of my business:  Satisfied customers who refer us to other customers.
